Green electricity from Urine. Light reduces the risk in refugee camps

University of Bristol researchers are testing a new way to generate energy: generating electricity from urine.

How does this technique work exactly and what are its benefits?

At the University of Bristol (UK), special urinals are generating electricity. The toilets are equipped with organic fuel cells. Once students and scientists have discharged their urine, a lamp lightens above their heads. It’s still a prototype, but if successful, co-organizer Oxfam wants to install these special urinals in refugee camps.

Urine into electricity

The technology behind the so-called “pee-power” toilet is actually pretty simple. The urinals are equipped with biological fuel cells and living microbes – present in these biofuel cells – “feed” themselves with the urine of the students. The microbes use the urine for their growth and simultaneously they transform the urine into energy, which causes the light in the bathroom lights.

Green, cheap and safe

This way of generating electricity, has many benefits.

  • Installation is simple
  • This pee power generation is fairly inexpensive
  • And perhaps the biggest plus: it’s awfully green

“A greener production of energy production is almost impossible” according tot Professor Ioannis Ieropoulos, director of the Bristol Energy Centre, who leads the research team, “because we don’t use any fossil fuels, We use a waste product of which we have plenty,”

By providing lighting in the toilet, especially women feel a lot safer. The researchers expect that, provide an entire refugee camp with lighting in the toilets, will cost about $ 600 for this installation of electricity.
